He's reading!!!
Yes! My son (nearly10) has read three chapter books in 1 week - about half the book each night before bed! They are books from the 'Too Cool' series that he has had for a couple of years. It has probably been that long since he has actively read a story book (since leaving school). I knew he would come back to it in his own time. Of course, I have known that there has been other reading happening the whole time. He reads environmental print, instructions in computer games, kids' magazines like D-Mag and K-Zone, and short snippets of informational books when he is interested.
Even so, I have felt delighted seeing the books beside my bed where J-bird reads by the lamp. He also feels confident enough to come out and ask about any words he is unsure of and we just offer the word without turning it into a minilesson. Most of the time he has decoded the word but it is a vocabulary issue where he is unsure of the meaning.
Last night Sparkle and J-bird were playing a game where they would ask each other words to spell and they would see if they got it right. They do this every so often and it is heartwarming to see them WANT to play with language. :-)

My ten year old who taught himself to read at 7 just started to pick up chapter books and devour them about 5 months ago. Great feeling!
Yah! Waiting has paid off and he came to it on his own. How wise of you and exciting for him!

Just the encouragement I needed- I'm getting slack for not "pushing" Brielle to read chapter books. She is just now reading children's books without stumbling on every word and more and more she is reading to her sister because she wants to. Why would I make reading a struggle for her? Thanks again!
